Crime comes and goes in any neighborhood, especially in-town. The crime in Medlock is about the same, but because of social media, we hear more about issues. The most crimes are Break-ins, Car break-ins, and Car theft. Every year we have approx 15-30 break-ins within a mile of the school. We had seven break-ins last August and eight this past Feb. Three summers ago we had 12 break-ins in one month. Also, there are numerous new businesses being built in Suburban Plaza and the Fuqua development, along with almost 2000 new apartments, this will put an even bigger strain on the Dekalb County Police force and bring much more traffic through Medlock.
The greatest benefit of having a paid patrol is that we will have immediate 911 response, the officers can issue tickets to help cut down the speeding of commuters through the neighborhood, and the presence of a police car in Medlock Park will help deter crime.
- Officers will patrol neighborhood streets, may issue traffic citations, will be on watch for suspicious persons and activities, will make reports of such persons and activities as well as any incidents or arrests and will conduct "vacation" checks of the homes of members in good standing upon request. Additionally, officers will respond to any and all 911 emergencies generating in our neighborhood and occurring when they are working their 5 hour shift.
- The answer is Yes. The officers receive anti-bias and anti-racial training through Dekalb County. Bias-based stops are against Dekalb’s policies and procedures.
- Call 911. If our off-duty police officer is working at the time, he/she will hear any communication from the 911 dispatch center on the radio and will be able to respond promptly to calls generated in our neighborhood.
- No, the board members do not get paid, board members are volunteers who live in the neighborhood. Medlock Paid Patrol, INC has no employees. Officers who patrol are paid as contractors.
